NNPC Imports Almost Eleven Billion Litres of Fuel in 2016

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation  (NNPC) has said in its monthly report that the corporation imported a total of 10,773,726,472.84 litres of fuel (petrol and kerosene) into the country in 2016 using its crude for product swap programme. This is approximately eleven billion litres of fuel that could have been produced locally but for the many challenges confronting our local refineries.

According to the report, it made use of crude oil for domestic utilisation framework which allows it to take about 445,000 barrels of oil per day. The corporation according to the report committed 5.66 million barrels mb of oil to the Direct Sale Direct Purchase in February, 2016, 9.49mb in March and 10.44mb in April respectively. A total of 9.89mb was committed in May, 7.57mb in June while 5.69mb was repeatedly injected in July and August.

It’s lowest commitment of 3.83mb was made in September while the figures rose to 8.58mb and 9.49mb in October and November, 2016 respectively. This bring the total volume of crude injected into the scheme for year 2016 to 76.38mb.

Meanwhile, the federal government is doing everything possible to ensure our local refineries are up and running and one of the steps taken so far has been signing of MoU with Niger Republic for crude supply to Kaduna Refinery. Also, the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and the Minister Of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu are not relenting in their dialogues with the Niger Delta militants who are mostly responsible for destruction of oil facilities in their region.
