Niger Delta Gets $1B from Shell for Development

The turbulent Niger Delta region may soon begin to witness long lasting peace if the fruitful dialogue the Acting President, Prof Yemi Oshibajo is having with them is anything to go by. Reports have it that the federal government has secured a whooping sum of $1B from Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) for the development of the region, Thisday reports

The acting president made this known at a town hall meeting with governors, former governors, community leaders, youths and other stakeholders in the region. The Port Harcourt town hall meeting was part of his continued dialogue with the people in  his quest to ensuring a lasting peace in the area. You will recall that several attacks were carried out on oil facilities in the area which resulted in drastic cuts in crude oil production and government’s loss of revenue last year.

The Acting Vice President frowned at the way the region was abandoned despite it’s contribution to national wealth and demand that such abandonment should stop immediately. In his words:

“A funding of $1 billion at $200 million per annum over five years has been provided by Shell to provide drinking water, conduct health impact assessment and demonstrate remediation technologies.

“A groundbreaking for the construction of Centre of Excellence will be launched in a few days.

“Training of 2,000 women from four local government areas in greenhouse, shrimp, poultry farming for empowerment will commence soon.

“Environmental remediation is important throughout the entire region,”

“We must recommit to making the Niger Delta region a vibrant economic zone,” Osinbajo said, adding that the government intended to use small and medium businesses to drive and create employment and stimulate growth in the area.

“I have made notes, I have listened carefully; this will be a beginning that will change the narrative of the Niger Delta,”

He assured the people of government’s commitment to execute all necessary projects in the area and ensure the region enjoys what other oil producing communities are enjoying in other parts of the world. Also, he promised the people that no project in the area would be abandoned.

In your opinion, what would you rather want the federal government do for the Niger Delta people and how would you rather want this fund utilized?
